Did you know that in Italy, there’s a magical lady named La Befana who visits children every January? She’s not Santa—she’s an old woman with a broom, and she loves to bring treats to kids who have been good!

At Sigonella, our incredible Host Nation teacher, Mrs. DiBella, shares this wonderful tradition with students as part of learning about Italian Christmas celebrations. One of the favorite stories she reads is Tomie dePaola’s The Legend of Old Befana. This book tells the tale of Befana, who loves baking and keeping her house tidy. When she hears about a special journey, she decides to join in—but along the way, she discovers the joy of giving and kindness.

Learning about La Befana is so much fun! Students get to compare her to other gift-givers, make crafts, and even imagine what treats she might leave behind. It’s a great way to celebrate Italian culture and see how stories bring traditions to life.

Fun Family Activities to Try at Home

  1. Bake Befana’s Treats – Make simple Italian cookies like biscotti or cantucci. Share them with friends and neighbors as a way to spread kindness.
  2. Create a Befana Broom Craft – Use sticks, yarn, and paper to make your own Befana broom. Hang it by the door for good luck!
  3. Write a Letter to La Befana – Just like kids write to Santa, write a note to Befana asking for a sweet surprise or sharing a good deed you’ve done.
  4. Storytime Together – Read The Legend of Old Befana as a family and talk about what makes Befana special.

Look for La Befana Around Sicily

  • Local Markets & Festivals – Many towns in Sicily have Epiphany celebrations on January 6. Look for Befana dolls, decorations, and sweets at holiday markets.
  • Parades & Events – Some communities host parades where La Befana appears on a broom or even rides in on a Vespa!
  • Shops & Bakeries – Keep an eye out for Befana-themed treats like stockings filled with candy or chocolate coal.

Exploring these traditions together makes the holiday season even more magical—and helps families feel connected to the culture around them.
