Sigonella first graders showcase student-designed robots in hallway display
SIGONELLA, Italy — First grade students at Sigonella Elementary School recently brought creativity and problem-solving to life through a hands-on robotics project that culminated in a schoolwide hallway showcase.
The project challenged students to identify a problem—large or small—and design a robot intended to solve it. After completing their creations, students displayed their robots throughout the school hallways, allowing classmates, staff and visitors to view the diverse range of ideas developed across classrooms.
The prompt resulted in a colorful collection of imaginative designs. Each robot reflected the specific challenge its creator chose to address, demonstrating thoughtful planning and individual expression. In addition to the hallway display, students presented their projects in class, explaining the purpose behind their designs and the problems their robots were built to solve.
Among the featured creations was “Rumi,” a ramen-cooking robot designed to prepare noodles. Another student developed a Calculator Robot focused on assisting with math tasks. Additional projects included a Cleaner Robot to help organize messy bedrooms, a Cat Robot modeled after a household pet, and a Food-Selling Robot designed to serve or sell food.
Several robots addressed everyday responsibilities and environmental concepts. “Coconut,” a robot designed to swim in the ocean, highlighted movement through marine environments. A Plant-Care Robot focused on watering and monitoring plants, while a Clothes-Folding Robot was created to assist with laundry. One student also designed a technology-support robot aimed at helping others learn more about technology.
A student-built version of Wall-E, inspired by the well-known animated robot character, added a recognizable element to the display and connected to the broader robotics theme.
By integrating the projects into the hallway setting, the display became part of the school’s daily environment. Students, staff and visitors were able to pause, review project descriptions and appreciate the wide range of creative solutions on display. Through the combination of design planning, construction and presentation, the project provided students an opportunity to apply foundational problem-solving skills in an engaging and visible way.
