Thanksgiving Activities at Sigonella Elementary
Turkey Disguises & Balloons Over Broadway
Sigonella Elementary School students brought creativity and seasonal excitement to campus as they took part in a variety of Thanksgiving-themed learning experiences. Across multiple grade levels, students combined art, writing, imagination, and cultural exploration to celebrate the season in meaningful ways.
Turkey Disguise Projects
Students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade participated in the annual Turkey Disguise Project, transforming their paper turkeys into everything but a turkey. Hallways were filled with colorful characters—mermaids, superheroes, animals, and more—each showcasing the unique creativity of our Knights. Many students also wrote descriptive pieces to accompany their disguised turkeys, strengthening writing, vocabulary, and presentation skills.
Balloons Over Broadway
Both Kindergarten and 2nd grade engaged in activities inspired by Balloons Over Broadway, the story of puppeteer Tony Sarg and the creation of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.
• In Mrs. Reardon’s Kindergarten class, students learned about Tony Sarg, the history of the parade, and how the iconic balloons were engineered. Afterward, students designed and created their own balloon floats, applying what they learned about art, design, and storytelling.
• In 2nd grade, students read Balloons Over Broadway and watched a video that explored the creativity and engineering behind the parade. Students then created their own imaginative balloon characters and shared them with classmates.
Host Nation: “Autunno” Projects
Our Host Nation Italian classes enhanced the Thanksgiving atmosphere with vibrant fall-themed displays. Students learned Italian vocabulary related to autumn animals, foods, and seasonal traditions—including Sicily’s grape and olive harvests. They decorated hallways with posters featuring words such as la foglia (leaf), l’uva (grapes), il riccio (hedgehog), la mela (apple), and la zucca (pumpkin). Their artwork celebrated cultural understanding while reinforcing language-learning skills.
Sigonella Elementary is proud of the joy, creativity, and teamwork our Knights showed throughout these Thanksgiving activities. We wish all our families a warm and restful holiday season.
