A Message From the Principal

Dear Sigonella ES Community,

After a nice, long weekend we are back and ready to roll.  We are about halfway through the third quarter already, so it is a good time to take stock and see how your child is progressing.  If you child is in 4th or 5th grade, please be sure to log into your Aspen Family Portal account to check his/her grades thus far.  You can always reach out to your child’s teacher to see how he/she is progressing towards grade level expectations.

This week wraps up with some fun and exciting opportunities for families at Sigonella ES.  Ms. Russo hosts the February Family Afternoon at the Sig ES School Library 2:35-3:35. After parent pick up at dismissal, head up to the library for a fun activity and for family check out. Then the Sigonella ES PTA hosts a Pajama Dance Party in Knight’s Hall from 4-6pm.  Volunteers are still needed for the set-up crew, dance floor helpers, and clean-up crew.  Check out the PTA’s Facebook page for more information or reach out to a board member to join the fun.

Finally, don’t forget to let your voice be heard by providing your personal experience through the Stakeholder Feedback Survey which is open until March 13, 2026.  You should have received an email containing your link to the survey.  The process is a voluntary, anonymous, and only takes 15-20 minutes.  Your support is appreciated!

All the best for a fantastic week,

Sara Guth

News from the Nurse

Health Room Reminder: I keep a supply of extra clothes in the health room for students who need a change during the day. If your child borrows clothing, their soiled clothes will be sent home in a bag with a reminder note. Please wash and return the loaner clothes as soon as possible so we can keep our supply stocked—it's running low. Thank you for your help!

Lice: We've got a handy handout on lice prevention and treatment ready for you! Please review it and take necessary precautions. Remember to check your child’s head every week for live lice or nits. The school nurse is a GREAT resource for lice information and support 😉.

Contact Information:
As the school nurse, I may need to reach you if your child becomes ill or is injured during the school day. Please ensure your contact details in ASPEN are current so we can connect quickly when needed. Call the Front Desk to update.

Wondering when to keep your child home or what might be excludable symptoms to have at school?

Attendance Policy

In accordance with the policy stated in DoWEA Regulation 2095.01, “School Attendance,” August 26, 2011, as amended, school attendance is mandatory. All students are required to attend school to ensure continuity of instruction and that they successfully meet academic standards and demonstrate continuous educational progress. School attendance is a joint responsibility between the parent or sponsor, student, classroom teacher, school personnel, and, in some cases, the Command. Students with excessive school absences (or tardiness) shall be monitored by the Student Support Team to assist in the completion of all required work and successful mastery of course objectives.

Daily student attendance is identified based upon a quarter of the school day formula. Students will be identified as present or absent, based on the following criteria:

  1. Absent up to 25% of the school day = absent one-quarter of the school day
  2. Absent between 26%–50% of the school day = absent one-half of the school day
  3. Absent 51%–75% of the school day = absent three-quarters of the school day
  4. Absent 76%–100% of the school day = full-day absence

DoWEA considers the following conditions to constitute reasonable cause for absence from school for reasons other than school-related activities:

  1. Personal illness;
  2. Medical, dental, or mental health appointment;
  3. Serious illness in the student’s immediate family;
  4. A death in the student’s immediate family or of a relative;
  5. Religious holiday;
  6. Emergency conditions such as fire, flood, or storm;
  7. Unique family circumstances warranting absence and coordinated with school administration;
  8. College visits that cannot be scheduled on non-school days; and
  9. A pandemic event.

Unexcused absences may result in school disciplinary actions. An absence from school or a class without written verification from a parent or sponsor will be unexcused. Student attendance is calculated based upon the date of enrollment in a DoWEA school, which may occur anytime during the school year. Student attendance monitoring is designed to provide a continuum of intervention and services to support families and children in keeping children in school and combating truancy and educational neglect. Parents should notify the school of their child’s absence 30 minutes after the start of the school day. Too many unexcused absences may trigger the Student Support Team to convene.
