Dr. Jeff Arrington, Superintendent of the DoDEA Europe South District, is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Alexia Kunkle as the Principal of Sigonella Middle High School. Ms. Kunkle most recently served as the Assistant Principal of Sigonella Middle High School. In making the announcement, Dr. Arrington remarked, “Ms. Kunkle brings a wealth of instructional and administrative experience to the principalship, and I am confident that she will bring these to her new role to improve student learning.”

Ms. Kunkle began her DoDEA journey as a substitute teacher in Okinawa, Japan while she was a military spouse. After her family transitioned to civilian life, she taught high school Social Studies and Integrated Kindergarten for special needs students in Pennsylvania and Illinois. In 2012, she returned to DoDEA as a Special Education and Social Studies teacher at Antilles High School in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she taught courses such as AP World History, Psychology, and Special Education.

After her time in Puerto Rico, Ms. Kunkle taught Special Education, high school mathematics, and study skills at Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokosuka, Japan. In 2017, she accepted a position in Naples, Italy as a DoDEA Europe South District Instructional Systems Specialist for Special Education. In Naples, she supported special education initiatives, program monitoring, compliance, and provided professional learning for teachers and administrators. Ms. Kunkle was promoted to assistant principal in 2019 at Lakenheath Elementary School in the U.K. and was instrumental in implementing a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system focused on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors in educational settings.

In January of 2022, Ms. Kunkle was delighted to become a Jaguar and join the community at Sigonella MHS as the assistant principal. Transitioning to the role of principal at the school and continuing to support military-connected students and their families will continue to be her top leadership priority.

A Pennsylvania native, Ms. Kunkle holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and History from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in special education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania as well as post baccalaureate teacher certification from Moravian College and Educational Administration from Point Park University. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and traveling.
